As we near the new winter season, we find ourselves in the midst of an historic pandemic. We are seeking answers to growing questions as our Country’s leaders, medical and scientific experts seek not only an understanding of Covid 19, but are expending herculean efforts to find both treatments and vaccines, in an attempt to return us to normalcy. It appears that for the foreseeable future our world has changed and we will continue to live in uncertain times.

This uncertainty led the LTPA to suspend its traditional monthly social events through December 31, and possibly through the entire season.  The LTPA Board, which deliberated with great care, believes that is in the best interest of our members and our beloved community to err on the side of caution.

In recent years, our membership has grown to well over 400 members and our parties and gatherings in recent years have exceeded over 250 for each of our events.  Our indoor gatherings average 200+.  The board discussed holding such indoor or outdoor gatherings given the established protocols, but any option we considered would have limited the number of people and constrained each event, creating complexities and ultimately risks. LTPA’s gatherings are by nature, social gatherings.  They would likely be inconsistent with State, County and National guidelines, as well as the Landings protocols.

The LTPA is grateful to the Landings Management and Board who have worked hard to maintain court play since Covid 19 found its way to Florida, while creating safe and healthy protocols. As of this writing, we are hopeful that tennis play will continue on our courts with the community coming together and working together in a spirit of support and understanding, recognizing how complex the pandemic has become.

Perhaps we can learn from the experiences of the 1918 Pandemic, which created worldwide havoc and killed millions.   In so many ways, we are blessed to fight Covid 19 with our modern medical resources, knowledge, skills and facilities, as well as world-wide near instantaneous communication sources.  As much as we have to learn about the Virus and work ahead to find treatments and vaccines, we have incredible advantages compared to how society dealt with the virus in 1918. Writing in the Smithsonian Magazine in 2020, author John Barry took an extensive look at the 1918 Spanish Flu which is most relevant to guide us today.  At that time, a plea from the American Red Cross for “patience, prudency, understanding and care for one another” seems as relevant today as it did 100 years ago.

No we aren't talking about a inside in winner down the line, we are diligently searching for the winner of the winner of the Casino Night Firestone Restaurant prize!

The winner neglected to put their event number on the ticket so we have no way of easily identifying the winner.

The winning ticket is  #235999.  If you still have this ticket, please contact Kathy Armstrong at karmstrong3030@att.net

A new season is on its way!   The LTPA (Landings Tennis and Pickleball Association), one of the largest social organizations of its in kind in Florida, will soon be hosting an array of fun events both on and off the courts for the upcoming 2019-2020 season.

Current LTPA members can renew on line at www.ltpafun.org and new residents can join the LTPA at this same Internet location.   The LTPA website includes a handy directory of members for easy connection to your court friends, as well as a convenient way to sign up for events and stay connected on events and activities.

The LTPA is a social organization, with its focus to host social and fun events that bring tennis residents and renters together, build friendships and court partners!    The LTPA supports the events and activities offered by the Landings tennis Director, but is not associated with the operational aspects of Landings tennis (policies, operational issues, court maintenance).  That is the work of the Landings Tennis Committee.  The LTPA is the party people!  We bring people together and build relationships, share good times for fun, on and off the court.    Similar to the Landings Yacht Club and Marina Committee, the Landings Yacht Club plans and hosts events, cruises, parties and good time opportunities, but the day to day operation of the Marina (policies, practices, maintenance, etc) is managed by the HarborMaster and Marina Committee.

In 2018, the LTA (Landings Tennis Association) became the LTPA (Landings Tennis and Pickleball Association with the addition of our awesome new Pickleball courts.  These racquet-based sporting activities often result in players playing both sports, although some folks play one or the other.  The Pickleball folks asked to join in the social fun and networking that was in place with the LTA, so we joined forces to build on the fun.  It’s a perfect racquet match.

LTPA President Sandy Mohlman says,  “The season is going to be full of great times at the Landings, as we have planned some really creative and fun-filled events.  Being a part of the LTPA is a wonderful way to make new friends and sustain great friendships.   We have a great Board that is excited and committed to making the Landings the best place to be in love with Tennis!  We are blessed to have a wonderful tennis facility, and even more blessed to have such great people in our tennis community.”

The opening event for the LTPA is Casino Night; an evening of fun Vegas style gaming options, including Slot Machines, Blackjack, Poker, Roulette, Craps, Big Money Wheel, Baccarat – and more!    With the chips you are given, you work to build your winnings and earn chances on great prizes of your choice, including tennis lessons from the staff, adventure trips, dining opportunities and much, much more!    Don’t gamble?  Come on out, as our welcome back event is a  “can’t miss” opportunity to say hello, and hug our friends from the summer break and possibly win a great prize without gambling.  Casino Night sign ups begin in mid October through the LTPA website.   Check out more event details through the website.

Casino Night is just the beginning.  In December we host our annual Holiday Party in support of Hope Hospice.   In January we hold a pro exhibition at Stadium Court in the afternoon followed by our ever-popular GermanFeast evening of food and fun at Picnic Pointe.  Then, look out.  Its back.  And this time it’s for keeps with the February return of Battle for the Booty, the biggest tennis struggle this side of the Atlantic.  Tom Wallace and Craig O’Donnell will lead their teams to victory and crazy fun.  In March, we close out the season with our community wide Village Challenge, where each village vies for bragging rights to hold through the year.

Pickelball is a growing part of racquet life in the Landings and we join these two court activities into one big fun loving social group.    The Village Challenge and Battle for the Booty will include competitive play for both Pickleball and Tennis.

Of course, these racquet related social events are only those hosted by the LTPA.  Tennis Director Tom Wallace and his staff will hold many court activities, including the annual Club Championships, round robins, exhibitions, and special events throughout the season.  Your LTPA works closely with Tom and his staff to make Landings tennis the benchmark for tennis fun and fellowship.
